Eighteen

Before leaving for work that morning Sukey had taken a fish pie from the freezer for her supper. When she reached home she was tempted to contact Harry straight away but, conscious that she was feeling tired and empty, having had nothing but a sandwich for lunch, she put the pie in the oven and prepared some vegetables before making the call.

‘I got your text,’ she said. ‘Have you come up with something?’

‘Haven’t I just!’ Harry’s tone was gleeful. ‘It so happens I’ve got some leave due to me so I thought I’d use some of it to work on our project. I’ve already dug up some very interesting stuff. Is it OK if I pop round?’

‘Can it wait for an hour while I have something to eat?’

‘I guess so. See you about eight.’

He arrived with a notebook in one hand and a bottle of red wine in the other. Sukey looked at the bottle with raised eyebrows. ‘What are we celebrating? Don’t tell me you’ve found Adelaide’s killer already.’

Harry grinned. ‘Not quite, but I think I may have found the reason why Cousin Muriel left Parson’s Acre to her instead of to one of her siblings.’ He marched into the kitchen, put the notebook on the table, took an opener from his pocket and pulled the cork from the bottle before she could stop him. ‘How about some glasses?’

‘I had wine with my supper and I’m not sure I want any more.’

‘I think you’ll find this is worth another snifter.’

She took an extra glass from a cupboard. ‘OK, let’s hear it.’

‘It’s been so easy, I can hardly believe my luck,’ he said as he poured the wine. ‘I know why Adelaide left the property to Leonora Farrell, who isn’t even a member of the family.’

‘Well, that was pretty obvious,’ said Sukey. ‘There was some sort of family feud.’

‘It didn’t take a genius to figure that one out,’ he agreed, ‘but that’s just for starters – wait till you hear the details. Shall we sit down?’

She led the way into the sitting room. ‘This had better be good. I’ve had a pretty stressful day.’

For once, he made no attempt to worm information out of her. ‘I promise you won’t be disappointed.’ Treating her to his most engaging smile, he raised his glass. ‘Cheers!’

The smile failed to strike the customary spark. Instead, she glared at him over the rim of her glass. ‘Will you take that smug grin off your face and get on with it,’ she said with a touch of exasperation.

‘Was I looking smug?’ he said.

‘You were.’

‘When you hear what I’ve uncovered maybe you’ll forgive me.’ He put down his glass and opened his notebook. ‘The first task was to track down the aggrieved relatives. You may recall that Henry Minchin gave evidence of identification at the inquest into Adelaide’s death, so I checked the records and found his address. And guess what else I found.’

‘That he’d given a false address?’ Sukey suggested.

‘Something far more interesting,’ said Harry. ‘It was genuine all right, but it also happens to be his business address.
